Let’s look at two different YouTubers:
YouTuber 1: The YouTuber has only 10 subscribers. You stumble upon a video and it is amazing. The quality is perfect and the editing is really top-notch. The video makes you want to watch another one! So you do. This video is as good as the first. You have no idea how this YouTuber has only 10 subscribers. Either way, now he has 11.
YouTuber 2: The YouTuber has 15,000 subscribers. You stumble upon a video. It’s subpar. The editing could use work and at times the audio quality is not great. You leave the video midway through. You have no idea how this YouTuber has 15,000 subscribers. You check the channel and it looks like there was one popular video that got all of the subscribers. You leave the channel.
Let’s assume both YouTubers keep making videos for another year.
YouTuber 1: Subscribed to the channel, you click on a video. Again, it’s great! Maybe even better than before, if that’s even possible. Videos are filled with comments. They have a huge like-dislike ratio. You check the YouTuber’s subs count: 20,000. My, channel has grown. For good reason too!
YouTuber 2: For a blast from the past, you visit this YouTuber’s channel. You watch a video. It’s still pretty bad. The YouTuber is even plugging merch. There are two or three comments on each video. You look at the sub count: 15,600. Well, the channel has grown… a little bit?
Another year down the line you check the channels out again.
YouTuber 1: You go again to check out the channel - now two years after you originally discovered it. The channel is posting videos daily and each is getting hundreds of thousands of views. There are hundreds of comments on each video. The sub count reads 138,000. It seems this YouTuber has made it finally! But you didn’t have any doubt. As soon as you saw the first video you knew that this one was special. This one was going to make it to the top.
YouTuber 2: You go to check the channel. You find the channel but the last uploaded video was 7 months ago. The sub count is 13,700. It seems this YouTuber finally got tired of working to post videos without getting much recognition. It’s sad to see this YouTuber go but deep inside you knew that there was never much hope anyway. The videos just were not all that great.
As a YouTuber, your content can make or break your channel. If you make good content that people like to see, you will quickly be noticed and carried up to the stars by supporters. If you make mediocre content, you could easily find yourself drowning in the vast sea that is YouTube.
YouTube Subscribers do not matter as much as other metrics like views count and serves as more of a distraction than anything

I’m always torn, and you have to make a decision based on the platform that you have.

With YouTube, there is no infrastructure and you have to reach people individually. You will reach millions.

No matter what the age, the content will be very important. There are hundreds of thousands of channels doing kid shows like that and they are mostly meant to entertain, nothing more. Kids who do watch anime have their favorites but don’t watch them on a daily basis. They may watch a series or maybe just an episode.

If you have a channel with a lot of different ideas in it, then there are times when you need to think more about what the audience will want.
